At the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan energized the automotive world by pulling the covers off the all-new NISMO variant of the Ariya compact SUV, the marque's most advanced electric vehicle (EV) to date.

With sales commencing this spring in Japan, this state-of-the-art crossover SUV merges the celebrated performance of NISMO-tuned machines with the eco-friendly credentials of electric power.

The Ariya NISMO demonstrates Nissan's commitment to sustainable mobility without compromising on driver enjoyment. It is built upon the solid foundation of the Ariya e-4ORCE (a Wards 10 Best Engines And Propulsions System winner) and features a design inspired by the next generation of NISMO styling.

Drivers can look forward to approximately 10 percent more peak output from the Ariya NISMO's electric motor, which, when coupled with special acceleration tuning and an exclusive NISMO driving mode, delivers a responsive and engaging drive.

The auditory experience is crafted to mimic the thrill of Formula E racing, augmenting the exhilaration behind the wheel.

The Ariya NISMO's advanced e-4ORCE electric-drive four-wheel-control technology is complemented by a tailored tuning of each chassis component to ensure superior stability, precise handling, and improved cornering abilities at higher speeds—benefits that are amplified by the fitment of dedicated tires on robust 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Aerodynamics plays a crucial role in the design of this electric powerhouse, with race-derived technologies reducing drag and enhancing downforce for greater efficiency and performance at velocity—a critical aspect of electric vehicles.

Step inside the Ariya NISMO, and you're greeted by a lavish cabin that doesn't skimp on luxury. The interior is adorned with high-quality features, including NISMO-specific seats and trim, elevating the sense of exclusivity and sportiness.

The Ariya NISMO comes in two variants: the NISMO B6 e-4ORCE and the NISMO B9 e-4ORCE. While both models share the same dimensions, measuring 184 inches long and 73 inches wide, and a 109-inch wheelbase, they differ in weight, power output, torque, and battery capacity.

The B6 boasts a 66 kWh battery, 363 horsepower, and 413 lb-ft of torque, while the B9 boasts a 91 kWh battery, a mightier 429 horsepower, and an impressive 443 lb-ft of torque. Both variants are shod in 255/45R20 tires for a firm grip on the road.

Comparatively, the standard, fully-electric Nissan Ariya comes in five different trim levels, two drive configurations (FWD/AWD), and two battery capacities (63kWh, 87kWh).

The price ranges from $43,190 for the FWD Engage with a 63kWh battery to $60,190 for the AWD Platinum with an 87kWh battery.

The vehicle features a spacious and upscale interior with premium materials and standard tech and safety features. The driving range varies from 205 miles to 304 miles, depending on the drive, battery, and motor combinations.

The Ariya is praised for its gentle ride, whisper-quiet cabin, and advanced features. However, some reviewers note that it lacks driver engagement and offers a lower base range than most competitors, the first of which the NISMO variant is sure to fix.

The Ariya competes in a growing electric SUV segment and faces tough competition from the likes of Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona, and the Toyota bZ4X. Fighting the competition, the Ariya comes armed with a pair of 12.3-inch screens behind a single glass panel.

The driver's digital instruments are customizable, and the central screen operates the majority of infotainment systems. The infotainment system includes over-the-air (OTA) software upgrades, Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, 'Hello, Nissan' voice commands, and Amazon Alexa integration.

It also features a function to thermally condition the battery ahead of time for the most effective recharging. In the driver-aid and safety department, the Ariya includes ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link and ProPILOT Assist 2.0.

These systems provide hands-off, foot-off driving, help keep a preset distance from the vehicle ahead, assist with highway lane changes, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and more.

The vehicle is also equipped with anti-lock brakes, stability control, front-impact airbags, side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, knee airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners. The Ariya’s cabin boasts a lounge-like space with seating for 5 passengers.

It includes an interactive lighting feature, crafted details inspired by Japanese woodwork, and a modular interior that transforms the vehicle into a versatile space.

The vehicle offers up to 22.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, with a unique Divide-N-Hide cargo system providing flexible storage options.

As the automotive industry shifts gears towards a more sustainable future, Nissan's Ariya NISMO model stands as a beacon of what's possible when high performance and environmental consciousness travel in the same direction.

As the NISMO excitement builds, fans and prospective buyers are eager to experience the thrill of NISMO's flagship EV model on the streets and highways of Japan—and eventually around the globe.
